Where we came from
Our story
Preston Sandlin has been inspecting homes since 1996. In 2006 he and Meg founded Home Inspection Carolina in Charlotte, with one inspector and one idea: that the person paying for the inspection deserves a straight answer about the house, delivered in language they can act on.
Twenty years on, HIC is still family owned and still headquartered in Charlotte, but it now covers six markets across two states. Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham, the Triad, Fort Mill, Rock Hill and Columbia. The company employs 25 licensed home inspectors alongside an office and growth team, and runs a commercial division, Commercial Inspection Carolina.
What did not change is the in-house model. Radon, mold, termite, sewer scope, infrared, well water, drone and pool work are all carried out by HIC inspectors who are certified in that specific service, rather than subcontracted out. One visit, one schedule, one invoice, and one company answerable for the result. Our inspectors hold memberships with InterNACHI and Inspector Nation, and continuing education is run in-house rather than left to each inspector to chase.

Home Inspection Carolina has been inspecting homes across the Carolinas since 2006. What started in Charlotte now covers six markets in two states, with 25 licensed inspectors and a support team that answers the phone.
We are an inspection company and nothing else. We do not do repairs, we do not do remediation, and we do not take referral fees from contractors. The only thing we sell is an honest look at the house, which is the only way an inspection is worth anything.
What we believe
- The client is the buyer, not the deal. Our report goes to you, and it says what we found whether or not it is convenient.
- You should be there. Walking the house with your inspector teaches you more than any report can.
- We explain what we find. A finding you cannot understand is a finding you cannot act on.
- Everything in-house. Radon, mold, termite, sewer scope, infrared, water and drone are all done by our own certified inspectors, one visit, one report.
- Certified, not just licensed. Every inspector is certified in each service they perform, not just generally qualified.
Our divisions
Home Inspection Carolina handles residential work, buyers, sellers, new construction and warranty inspections.
Commercial Inspection Carolina (CIC) is our commercial division, carrying CCPIA certification for commercial property inspections. Several of our inspectors work across both.
