What the certificate covers
What FAA Part 107 requires
Part 107 is the Federal Aviation Administration’s Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems rule, and the remote pilot certificate issued under it is what legally separates commercial drone flight from flying one in a park. Earning it means passing an FAA knowledge examination covering airspace classification and charts, weather and its effect on small aircraft performance, loading and performance limits, emergency procedures, radio and airport operations, and the operating rules themselves. The certificate is maintained through recurrent training.
In practice it means the person flying over your roof understands the airspace they are in, knows when conditions make a flight unsafe or illegal, and can request authorization through LAANC when the property sits under controlled airspace, which a great deal of Charlotte and the Triangle does.
It also means the flight is insured commercial work performed by your inspector as part of the inspection, rather than a favour from somebody with a hobby drone. The aerial images become part of your report. For the full detail on how and when a roof gets flown, see drone roof inspections.
